CCS/CC3220MOD: Feasability of programming and external JTAG debug on CCS for CC3220MOD

Hi,

Currently we have requirement of developing a custom board with CC3220MOD. While doing the feasability analysis, I noticed on C3220MOD datasheet that JTAG Ports are locked. My question is can the CC3200MOD version be programmed and debugged using CCS and external JTAG just like the normal CC3220 chip version? I know that there is a launchpad available for CC3220MOD and it has debugging enabled. Just want to confirm if there are any extra constraints while programming the CC3220MOD version compared to normal CC3220 for a custom board (not the launchpad). Kindly help shed some light on it.

Hi Sourajit,

At CC3220MOD can be JTAG/SWD used without any problem for development. Module need to be switched in development mode. This is same for module as QFN chip.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the reply. Can you please elaborate on the "Module need to be switched in development mode." part. What are the steps to do that? After switching to development mode, the normal CC3220 SDK can be used right?

Hi Sourajit,

Same step as you done with your CC3220 LaunchPad. That mean you upload image with set development mode by Uniflash software.

In development mode is debug port (JTAG) enabled and it is possible read/write files directly into flash using Uniflash.

In the datasheet of CC3220MOD, it is mentioned that JTAG ports are locked. Does that mean the module will come to me with JTAG locked? After that how to unlock them?

Hi Sourajit,

Where is this written?

I found only notice about security feature at fist page of datasheet "Initial Secure Programming - JTAG and Debug Ports are Locked". Same notice is at datasheet for CC3220 QFN.

its on the front page of the data sheet. It is meant for after development/debug to lock the JTAG...

page 67 www.ti.com/.../cc3220mod.pdf - FUNCTIONAL_4WJ line in table 6-5.
it reads ==> Functional development mode. In this mode, 4-pin JTAG is available to the developer. TDI, TMS, TCK, and TDO are
available for debugger connection. The default configuration for CC3220MODx and CC3220MODAx modules.

so - JTAG is open for you, and to use it, should leave SOP lines in default - the pulldowns are on the module - after your development and for production, put device in production mode to lock the JTAG and use a production image, which is programmed via UART (most common)or SPI.
