Hi !

I would like to read video data from a camera outputting PAL/NTSC with my CC3200-LAUNCHXL. The CC3200 MCU features an 8-bit parallel camera interface, so I could use a PAL/NTSC to 8-bit parallel decoder like the TVP5150. However, all of the decoders I have found output 8-bit ITU-R BT.656 format. And this where I am beginning to have troubles. From the complete datasheet of the CC3200, we can read p429 that BT mode is not supported, but we can also read in the camera control register description p444 that some bits are dedicated to 8-bit parallel in BT mode (bits 12, 3-0).

So here are my questions :

Can the CC3200 MCU read 8-bit parallel in BT mode ?

If no, is there any other PAL/NTSC decoder outputting valid format for my CC3200 ?

Hi,

No, the CC3200 does not support BT mode on the 8bit parallel camera interface. I do not have a suggestion about what a suitable camera sensor could be for your application, but I would take a look at the existing camera app example and look at its image sensor for ideas: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC3200_Camera_Application.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the answer. But if CC3200 does not support BT mode, then what are the BT mode dedicated bits for in the camera control register ?

Hi Pierre,

Having the dedicated bits for setting the peripheral into BT mode does not necessarily mean that it will operate correctly in that mode. You are welcome to try to set those bits and see what happens, but we do not guarantee proper operation of the parallel camera peripheral or the MCU as a whole under those conditions.

I just read in the TVP5150 datasheet that TVP5150 chip could output 8-bit ITU−R BT.656 or 8-bit 4:2:2. Is 4.2.2 what is meant by non BT mode ?

Hi Pierre,

If that output mode provides the sync signal (h-sync, v-sync) on two discrete pins, then it should mean it's a non BT mode compatible with the CC3200. See this E2E post for a detailed explanation between the BT.656 and 4:2:2 output modes:
