WL1831MOD: eSCO Over UART Support

Part Number: WL1831MOD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2564MODN, WL1831

We are currently using the CC2564MODN and WL1831 in one of our products. We are looking to add Bluetooth Wideband audio support and are looking for some additional information.

The CC2564MODN documentation states clearly that it does not support eSCO over UART. However the WL1831 documentation does not make that clarification.

Does the WL1831 support eSCO over UART?

Is there a FW update for the CC2564MODN that would support eSCO over UART?

Thanks and regards,

Tyson

  • Hi Tyson,

The eSCO over UART is not supported for WL183x either.

Please note that, both devices support wide band speech using the AVPR (co-processor) running inside the Bluetooth controller. With this implementation, the eSCO data is not communicated to a host over UART but instead the PCM interface is used for the voice data.

The eSCO data, as the name suggests, is synchronous data whereas the UART is an asynchronous protocol. So there is always a possibility of UART buffer issues causing glitches in a eSCO over UART implementation. Thus, in general the wide band speech using the AVPR is much more stable than any implementation of eSCO over UART. Is there any specific reason you cannot use the WBS using AVPR?
