WL1837MOD: p2p_connect parameters to achieve 80MHz channel width

Part Number: WL1837MOD

Using wpa_supplicant 2.8

If I use p2p_connect mac_address pbc go_intent=11 ht40 to establish a WiFi direct connection in response to an invitation from a Samsung Galaxy S10 mobile device, my WLl1837MOD device is the group owner and the connection is established with band 5GHz channel 36 wide channel 38 channel width 40Mhz.

If I use p2p_connect mac_address pbc go_intent=7 ht40 to establish a WiFi direct connection in response to an invitation from a Samsung Galaxy S10 mobile device, my WLl1837MOD device is the client and the connection is established with band 5GHz channel 149 wide channel 155 channel width 80Mhz.

I understand the channels in each case are based on the scan results, but what I would like to know is whether there is a way to achieve the 80Mhz connection with a different set of options in the first example (an alternative to ht40).

  • Hi,

WiLink8 hardware doesn't support WiFi channels with 80 Mhz channel width .

    Thanks

    Saurabh

  • Hi Saurabh,

I don't know how much time you have to answer these posts, but it you can help me understand what I am seeing it would help tremendously. I will try to insert two screenshots below from a program called WiFi Explorer on my Mac. The highlighted network name in one of them will contain DIRECT-Nx-SM-G973F and device name is a Galaxy S10. That is the case where the phone is the group owner. In the other screenshot the highlighted network name is VA001000130 with same for the device name. In that case my device is the group owner.

I'm guessing you are going to tell me the WiFi Explorer is incorrect in what it thinks the Channel Width is (80MHz vs 40MHz) in the two cases?

    Tom

  • Hi Thomas ,

I cannot comment on WiFi explorer since i have personally not used it . But as far as 80Mhz channel width is concerned , i can assure you that WiLink8 h/w doesn't support it.

    Thanks

    Saurabh

  • Hi Saurabh,

Fair enough. I had a sense this was a shot in the dark. I appreciate your time. Are there any other references or examples available for setting up the wpa_supplicant for optimal channel selection you can point me to?

    Tom

  • Hi Tom ,

I don't believe we have such examples but you may refer to wl8 user guide : http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru423a/swru423a.pdf

I am assuming you are running p2p role on wl8 . General recommendation is to use 5 GHz band since it's wider and less congested band compared to 2.4 GHz.

    Thanks

    Saurabh
