[FAQ] Is WPA3 supported on SimpleLink Wi-Fi (CC3xxx) devices?

Is WPA3 supported on or planned for SimpleLink Wi-Fi devices? If so, which devices will it be supported on?

  • Yes. The CC3x35 products in the SimpleLink Wi-Fi family support WPA3 Personal in client mode as of SDK v3.40.00.05

WPA3 introduces the use of Protected Management Frames (PMF) as well as the Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE) technique to authenticate clients instead of the Pre-shared Key (PSK) used in WPA2-Personal. See https://www.wi-fi.org/discover-wi-fi/security for more details on WPA3.

WPA3 Enterprise support is currently planned to be released in the second half of 2020. Refer to the device datasheet for the latest details.

Support for WPA3 on the CC3x20 devices is not currently planned, but is under investigation.

  • All,

WPA3 Personal and Enterprise support has been completed and Wi-Fi certified on both the CC3x3x and CC3x20 SimpleLink Wi-Fi devices. The SDK versions which were used for certification on each generation of the device are as follows:

These SDK versions or later versions should be used to enable WPA3 support in CC3x3x and CC3x20 based products. To find the latest version of the CC32xx SDK, go here: https://www.ti.com/tool/SIMPLELINK-CC32XX-SDK
