WiLink8 platform as basis for group-based VoIP communication with automated (network layer) network healing/update and extended range via WiFi mesh node hopping

Dear forum members, dear TI team,

As a company we are looking for a group-based bidirectional communication solution and came accross your WiLink8 platform combining both WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy. I am especially interested in the "Wifi Mesh functionality". My aim is to implement a WiFi Mesh IP-based group communication both via direct WiFi connection between users and maybe an Access Point near by to also interconnect groups apart from each other via the interent. I need full-duplex VoIP bi-directional voice communication within a logical group of members. It would be nice to have a "self-healing" network feature, meaning if someone leaves the Mesh-Communication network and re-enters it, the update of the network structure is handled by each node upon the WiFi-mesh functionality - at least that is what I was hoping to have, to be able to focus on the application itself and not having to deal with network exploration and update of devices within it to pass the messages hop-wise within the network and thus achieve a higher range.   I would rely on the network stuff to be fully automated and availaible via an API (i.e. network architecture, network healing/update in WiFi mesh). Would the advertised mesh functionality be adequate for this purpose?

I also came accross the WL18xxMOD documentation PDF, stating in chapter 6 that a host processor must run Linux/Android and implement the Bluetooth/WiFi stack. So I guess a microcontroller would not be feasible for controlling the WiLink8 module? Thanks for your effort, best regards, Michael

  • Hi Michael ,

WiLink8 does support Wi-Fi mesh. Yes, it also supports self-healing. For more features pls refer to https://www.ti.com/lit/an/swaa166/swaa166.pdf

VOIP is generally a low bandwidth application , and WiLink8 Wi-Fi mesh should be able to support it.

Any application using mesh network would just access it using mesh node's i.p. address ( like any other network )

Yes, it is available on Linux OS since it uses 802.11s MAC layer that comes with Linux OS
