CC3235MODASF: CC3235 Disable 5GHz

Part Number: CC3235MODASF
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH

I'm working with a customer that is presently using the CC3220MODASF, but is considering a move to the CC3235MODASF in order to get the Soft Roaming feature. They have zero interest in 5GHz support, and are concerned about the added regulatory certification costs of testing for 5GHz.

The product is a handheld product, requiring SAR testing. They are testing for FCC, ISED, CE, and Australia/New Zealand regions. Though they are getting a quote from their test house for the extra 5GHz testing, the expectation is that it will add undesirable cost.

Given that the customer does not need 5GHz support, can 5GHz be permanently disabled at all times, including during calibration? We have noticed that there is a 5GHz disable option in the Uniflash serial programming interface. Does this disable all 5GHz output at all times, including during calibration?

Thanks,

Stuart

  • Hi Stuart,

Yes, using the 5GHz disable option in Uniflash will disable all 5GHz channels which will reduce scanning time and power consumption.

Do note that this does not permanently disable 5GHz functionality - you will still be able to use the sl_WlanSet() API to re-enable 5GHz if desired at runtime.

  • Seong,

I understand that the NWP interface also provides an API for disable and enable of 5GHz. My concern is that the NWP User's Guide states that this setting only takes effect in Station mode. The product will operate in both Station and AP mode, and must not EVER transmit in 5GHz mode. Not in Station mode or AP mode and not during calibration. If it EVER transmits in 5GHz mode, then the device needs to be tested for the 5GHz frequency band.

Can you assure the customer that as long as they keep the 5GHz setting disabled (Uniflash and/or NWP API), it will NEVER transmit in the 5GHz band?

    Thanks,

    Stuart

  • HI Stuart,

Let me double check and get back to you on this to be 100%.

  • Hi Stuart,

The device shouldn't use the 5GHz channels at all if the setting is disabled.

To be safe, the AP role settings should be configured to one of the 2.4GHz channels as well.
