CC2652R: Will ZigBee 3.0 Be Backwards Compatible?

Part Number: CC2652R
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2650, Z-STACK

Hi Team,

Will our CC2652 with ZigBee 3.0 have backwards compatibility talking to older CC2650 ZigBee 2.0 devices? I see some information here:

But I'd like an official TI answer, preferably with a bit of explanation with the answer :)

Thanks,

Barend

  • Hi,

The Zigbee 3.0 specification is backwards compatible with the Zigbee Home Automation 1.2 profile, as long as the Zigbee 3.0 device is configured as such. This means that our Zigbee HA 1.2 devices (i.e. CC253x/CC26x0 Z-Stack Home 1.2.2a devices) will be able to join a Zigbee 3.0 (CC253x/CC2652 Z-Stack 3.x) network, as long as the Zigbee 3.0 network is configured correctly to allow legacy devices to join the network.

Here is a full backwards and forwards compatibility list between Zigbee profiles:

    • A ZigBee Light Link device can join a distributed ZigBee 3.0 network using either classical or touch link commissioning (if supported by the network)
    • A ZigBee Light Link device can join a centralized ZigBee 3.0 network which does not require key exchange or install codes
    • A ZigBee Home Automation device can join a ZigBee 3.0 centralized network which does not require key exchange
    • A ZigBee 3.0 device can join either a ZigBee Light Link or a ZigBee Home Automation network using classical commissioning
    • A ZigBee 3.0 device can join a ZigBee Light Link network using touch link commissioning
    • A ZigBee 3.0 device can join a ZigBee 3.0 network with any trust center policy
    • A ZigBee 3.0 device can not join a ZigBee Home Automation network using touch link commissioning
    • A ZigBee Home Automation device can not join a ZigBee 3.0 distributed network
