Hi forum members,

I've bought some CC2531 USB-sticks online and have a problem with two of them.

If I try to flash it with new/other firmware it provides me with this error:

Chip is locked! Not able to read IEEE address. (Uncheck the "Retain IEEE address" option.)

If I uncheck that button it provides me with the following error.

CC2531 - ID0280: Debug interface locked! (Erase chip to unlock it)

If I try to erase it fully I finally get this.

CC2531 - ID0280: Flash erase failed

You can use Flash Programmer to unlock Debugger interface.

With SmartRF GUI (v1) from https://www.ti.com/tool/FLASH-PROGRAMMER I couldn't get it to work. Have I done something wrong?

And v2 doesn't recognize my chip. That's because I only have a CC-debugger. or would it be possible to use a USB=>TTL adapter since V2 accepts "Serial COM Port'?

And I bought a bunch from Aliexpress. Don't know the exact source.

Hi Imdos,

Can you post a close-up photo of the stick? I must clearly show the markings on the IC package.

To me it sounds like a defective product and you should return to whoever you bought it from.

This looks not like TI CC2531EMK. Anyway, make sure your CC2531 is well powered when you try to erase chip using Flash Programmer and CC Debugger.

One thing is for sure, the dongle is not manufactured by TI. The PCB revision says "1.0", while the latest official PCB revision released from us is 2.4. The IC markings though means that the IC was manufactured in 2018.

There is nothing wrong in this in itself, anybody is free to use our PCB designs. It do raises questions on how the CC2531 devices have been sourced, whether the production quality of the board is satisfactory or not, etc.

Again, I can only recommend you to ask for a refund from the seller.

Can you please confirm that the IC marking really is:

CC2531
F256
TI 84I <-----"I" (capital i), not "1"
YTCE G4

Can you also send me the IC marking for the other device?
