TIMAC vs Z-Stack for the CC2520 and MSP430

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: Z-STACK, TIMAC, CC2530, MSP430F5333, CC2520, CC2590

Hi:

I am using CC2520 / CC2590 along with the MSP430F5333. Since I am somewhat new to TI's ZigBee product offerings, I would like to get some clarification on the differences between TIMAC and Z-Stack. My biggest question... Which one should I be using? I see versions of Z-Stack that are targetted for the 8051 based TI parts (like the CC2530) for specific applications such as home automation and lighting control however, I also see a version of Z-Stack that appears to be targetted to the MSP430 in general and the CC2520 (swrc173.zip) but I cannot download it ("not available" according to TI's website). Before I invest a significant amount of time on the TI / ZigBee learning curve, I want to be sure that I have what I actually need as opposed to going down the wrong path.

  • Would you specify your application and I can suggest accordingly.

  • Hi:

My app is pretty basic. My main network configuration will be a single point-to-point (to replace a wired RS232 cable). In this case I will have one master controller sending commands to a slave device. We currently use a ZigBee based radio module from Synapse for this purpose. Very easy, very convenient and very expensive! Optionally, I might want to support a PMPP or star topology so that the same master can control multiple slaves. Software-wise, I am porting the application code to the MSP430 from an Atmel AVR processor so I will have to roll TIMAC or Z-Stack into that as applicable. I should point out that the product requires my processor to have 56 DIOs and 4 A/D inputs, hence my need for a processor like the 5333.

  • From your descrption, both Z-Stack and TIMAC are OK. Personally, I perfer to suggest you using Zigbee.

  • Thanks. By ZigBee, do you mean Z-stack? Is the generic version of Z-Stack available for the MSP430? (SWRC173.zip) I have a CC2520DK with CCMSP-EM430F2618 processor boards. It would be nice to get a sample app running on this as a start. I have downloaded the CC2520 Software Examples package (SWRC090b) but this package contains only the "Basic RF" protocol which is not very useful for commercial use.

  • Is swrc173.zip available for download or is it no longer supported?

  • You can download and install Z-Stack Home 1.2. After installation, you can find ZAP code in C:\Texas Instruments\Z-Stack Home 1.2.0\Projects\zstack\ZAP
