CC2531: Packet Sniffer

Part Number: CC2531
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PACKET-SNIFFER, FLASH-PROGRAMMER

Hi team,

My customer recently received a CC2531 Packet Sniffer Dongle and a CC Debugger. however they have not  been successful in sniffing any IEEE 802.15.4 traffic.

It would appear that there are two Packet Sniffers (https://www.ti.com/tool/PACKET-SNIFFER): PACKET-SNIFFER and PACKET-SNIFFER-2. Initially they assumed he PACKET-SNIFFER-2, but failed to find any support for the CC2531. They then reverted to PACKET-SNIFFER, which does offer support for the CC2531, but failed to sniff any traffic.

Although the documentation clearly states the the CC2531 Dongle comes per-populated with the sniffer software, it turned out that the dongle was not flashed with anything.

Can you inform how they can get the CC2531 to sniff IEEE 802.15.4 traffic?

The main problem they are stuck with is this. They can program and verify the CC2531 HEX file using FLASH-PROGRAMMER (the verification passes), but when they read it back the image does not match.

Any suggestions here would be appreciated.

Thanks and looking forward to your response.

Obinna.

  • Hey Obinna,

You are on the right path, packetSniffer is the correct one for the CC2531.

Can they try to open the packet sniffer even if the image readback is giving you an error?

Does it not work? It seems like flash programmer is able to erase, program, and verify.

I am contacting a colleague that works with this setup more often than me, so they can verify, but due to the weather conditions here in texas I may not get a response back as swiftly as usual.

Let me know if it works, while I verify on my end.

    Regards,

    AB

  • Hi,

Agreed with AB, the FW image for sniffer is the one in Packet Sniffer 1, and it seems like this is flashing ok onto the CC2531.

Do you know if the customer has already looked at these:

Are they sniffing on the correct channel?

When they start sniffing on Packet Sniffer, by clicking the play button, do they see that it is greyed out?

I ran a quick test on my desk: CC2531 + Packet Sniffer on channel 0xB (2405 MHz), and also a transmitter (using SmartRF Studio + CC2652) on same channel, and I see the activity on Packet Sniffer.
Can you ask customer to run a similar test ?

    Regards,
    Toby
