Failing to update firmware on CC2541 due to failed device reset (IOS7 and OAD)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2541

I have 8 different CC2541 Sensor Tag development kits, and am experiencing a consistent failure to update the firmware from version 1.01 (Feb 7 2013) to the 1.5 image.

I am doing an OAD from an IOS7 iPad.  I have the 1.5 image on the iPad, and select the B image to upload over the air.  Whether I chose safe mode or high speed mode, the update gets to 100%, and then I get an error:

FW Upgrade Failed

Device did not disconnect after programming as it should.  Firmware upgrade failed, you should check battery and settings.

I have tested with a brand new battery, on 3 different devices.

What else can I try, to successfully flash a 1.5 firmware onto my devices?

Steven

  • By any chance did you find a solution for this because I just came across this issue this morning.

    Thanks

  • Rich ... I haven't had any luck yet, and haven't had any responses.

Do let me know if you find a resolution, and I will do the same.

  • Rich, still no luck on my side .... you ?

I'm using an iPad mini, not an iPhone ... which is only difference I have from someone else who is doing this successfully.  You?

  • My ipad mini and ipod test are working I have one tester on a iphone 5 failing.

I dont know if its a client device issue I suspect its the cc board he is using.

    But no luck here either

  • I have two SensorTags one with 1.3 and other with 1.3.1 A firmware.

I tried to upggrade to 1.5 OAD method from both iPhone 5S with iOS 7 and iPad 3 with iOS 7

both attempted failed on both   SensorTags with same message as described above.

Please advice if there is any fix for this....

    Thanks

  • Having the same issue; my device is stuck on 1.0 (Dec 10 2012).

"Safe mode" and "High speed" don't work at all; I have to use "Advanced" and turn off "Use notifications" before it'll even try - otherwise it just sits at 0.0% - after failure, I can turn it back on. I'll randomly get "Device disconnected" messages too.

    This is with fresh batteries.

  • I tried updating to version 1.5 on a CC2541 SensorTag using the TI iOS SensorTag application. The updated failed at about 50% and now it appears that the SensorTag is bricked. The SensorTag appears on the available devices list, but when I select it I get a screen that says "NO PROFILES OR SENSORS ENABLED, CLICKING SETTINGS TO CONFIGURE DEVICE". I suspect the SensorTag is using the half loaded B firmware now. Is there anything I can do to "un-brick" the SensorTag?

  • Hello All,

I tried using an older version of the SensorTag iOS App v3.2 and the newer version of MultiTool to see if there where any problems.

    Both versions worked successfully.

Try cleaning the negative battery pad on the SensorTag.  It is a little hard to get at, but if you have a small screwdriver you might be able to scratch away at the surface.  The terminals have been now to oxidize a little and this would cause extra current drain on the battery.  You may as well try to clean the positive side too, along with the battery itself.

@Harvery, you should be able to go to profiles at the bottom left hand corner and then renenable the profiles that are off.

The CCDebugger that you can purchase from the eStore will allow you to connect to the device and reload the firmware.  Using the free SmartRF Programmer from TI.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,

  • Update: I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier, but rebooting the iPhone solved the problem. I had tried restarting the application before the reboot, but that did not work.
