Error loading bin file using SerialBootLoader in smartRF05EB

Hi,

I loaded the OADManager built using BLE stack 1.4.2 for CC2540 into a CC2540 board mounted on the smartRF05EB. When reset, I press the joy stick down and the screen shows SBL mode.

Here I try to load a bin file using serial boot loader 1.3.2 and hit the write error. Please find the attached images. I tried with BTool for the same smartRF05EB and it is working fine. So issue is not with the board or serial port.

Hi Tejas,

Are you able to verify that the SRF05 is present on COM6? Make sure the RS232 switch is enabled, additionally be sure that the EM selection is set to SoC/TRX.

Hi Tejas,

Fortunately your last screen grap shows the COM port settings. Can you try disabling CTS/RTS and set to None. The SBL does not enable HW flow control.

Hi,

@Sean: Yes. SRF05 is present on COM6. In device manager, I can see this. RS232 switch is enabled. But EM selection was set to MSP.

I made the following changes
1. EM selection is set to SoC/TRX
2. Flow control set to None

I encounter the error shown in screenshot-2 i.e `Device Command Response Timeout, Operation State = Handshake`
I changed the flow control back to CTS/RTS and the same errors occur as before. (Screenshot-1, 2 and then 3)

It seems quite strange that no one ever encountered such issues. So I want to make sure I am doing this correctly.
1. I loaded the OAD manager hex using flash programmer (BLE-1.4.2).
2. I connected a DB9 cable from SRF05 to computer.
3. I do a USB reset just to make sure and then, press the joystick down.
4. In the screen I see `OAD Manager <device_id> SBL mode...`
5. Then I open the serialBootLoader 1.3.2, select the OAD-imgB bin file. I make the configurations as mentioned and then, hit Load Image button.

Let me know if I am doing anything wrong.

Any suggestion on how to debug would help. We are really close to production and the decision about whether BIM should be used or BEM depends entirely on your answers. Please help.

Tejas,

I have verified this procedure to be correct as early as last week. It seems that your PC is not connecting to the SmartRF05 correctly or your cable is damaged. Perhaps you can try another cable. Also ensure that all the jumpers on the SRF05 are attached.

The next step is to provide a logic analyzer capture of communication between the PC and the SRF05EB so that we can help you debug.

I replaced smartRF05EB, the serial cable and the CC2540 module before taking a trace.

I used a crude logic analyser that would filter the data from serial port. It generated one read and one write file with the data. Attaching the files for reference.

Hi Tejas,

After reviewing your attached logic trace, I am unable to determine the cause of the problem. I think this may be related to the fact that your logic analyzer may be experiencing some difficulties capturing the transactions.

For example, the last transaction sent from the Serial Boot Tool is [TX] FF 001 FA 00 FF.

This is not a valid SBL frame. For example, there is no CMD field that corresponds to 0x00, and the SOF is always set to be 0xFE, however your logic analyzer is reporting it as 0xFF.

Is there a way for you to obtain a different capture, or if this is not possible, can you debug in the OAD manager code (within the SDK) and potentially determine where the device is hanging. To do this, I recommend re-creating the issue and then pausing the execution of the device to see where it has stopped executing from.

Hi Sean2 ,

I started debugging using break points in OAD manager program.

In sbl_exec_uart.c, we have a function sblRun. This puts the code in an infinite loop checking for TxLen and Rx Interrupt. I am guessing when I click on the Load Image button in SerialBootLoader, the URXxIF should become 1. But program execution never reaches this part.

So I put break points in all the conditions that might transfer the flow to some other function. Nope. None of the break points are triggered which means the program is stuck in infinite loop in sblRun. Any idea what might be the issue?

Hi,

Look like it was because of improper connection. I tried the same today and the interrupt is getting triggered.
But I am still not able to write the data using serialBootLoader.

In sblResp function, I am hitting a break point at return FALSE instead of return TRUE.
The reason is sbBuf[SBL_CMD2_STATE] hold 0x84 instead of 0x83. I observed this refers to following. But I am not able to debug any further.

Hello,

It looks like the SBL packet parser has reached an error parsing the packet and thus is going to throw it away, this likely will cause the SBL loop to break and end the process.

It is hard to tell exactly why the code is failing here without knowing exactly what is sent over the wire. Is it possible to capture a logic trace of this interaction? We really cannot debug further without this information. Saleae logic capture files are preferred, but if you use another logic analyzer that is okay. What we really need is to see the waveforms related to the last ~5-10 packets leading up to the failure. Can you provide this?

Hi,

I have attached the logic trace obtained by intercepting the data at the computer from COM port.

So packet 110 onward you can see that handshake signal is sent from computer and it received success response.

Packet 140 onward the data is written from computer into the COM port and the board responded with fe c0 4d 81 80 cd.

Also, I started printing the status at LCD (sbBuf[3]) and I got 84 for handshake followed by 81 for write. But it was stuck at that value for a while and the serialBootLoader threw this error.

One more thing I noticed was the write error is inconsistent. Often I hit handshake error and only a few times handshake is successful and the program moves to write part.

Let me know if I can debug this any further.
