Infection in Flash Programmer 2 when downloading from TI

Tried to download the TI Flash programmer 2 today from TI's web site. Upon download complete, Avast popped up a warning, "Infection: Win32:Malware-gen".

Note, I was downloading the file on a Mac which has a VMWare Win7 machine installed.

So, any idea where I might be able to download a clean version of the Flash Programmer?

I install it on another PC running Win 7 and it works.

Hi,

I have similar virus warning from my cloud service.

It may be just false alarm (I think).

It's too bad that so many people have this problem. Don't know why TI guys don't have this issue on their test.

Hi Guys,

Did you try to download and install it with suspended antivirus software?
After all, it's not that TI tries to infect our computers with a trojan/malware.
I myself installed it on Win7 (Panda antivirus installed and running) without any issues on the way.

Edit: To be more precise, now I recall installing it on XP (with NOD32)

Hi Igor,
Yes, you can install it with suspended antivirus software. However, antivirus software still detect the infection after you turn it on again. We cannot rum Windows XP system without antivirus software. It is too risky.

Not just XP: you should not run any system without antivirus - it is too risky!

However, your antivirus software should have some provision to exclude specific files and/or folders - for precisely the reason that all antivirus software does sometimes give false alarms.

There should also be a means for you to report false alarms to the ativirus software authors

Yes, antivirus software should have some provision to exclude specific files and/or folders. However, I prefer TI to check this first. If TI can guarantee this is not a read issue, I will do that.

As I said, I think it's a false alarm - so I doubt there's anything actually "wrong" that the they could "fix"?

Hi,
I can just confirm that we are working to find a solution for this. That means we have to figure out why some of the virus scanners see this as "Malware".

It is a false alarm. I think we should be able to make a new release to solve this in the beginning of this week.

A new release of the Flash Programmer should be available on ti.com within the day (1.6.2). The new installer has been tested with a web service that provides scanning by several scan engines.
The previous release gave an error while the new release don't. The number of Virus scanners that is tested is about 55. Hopefully that covers most of them and that nobody see this problem again.

I was able to pin down the exact line of code that caused the Virus scanners to give an alert. The bright users will notice that the "settings" menu under the "Tool" icon has been changed. Previously this contained an option with the text string "XDS100/XDS200". The text string is given as parameter when creating the menu item. To my big surprise, changing the text to something different solved the problem. It was difficult to find a combination with "XDS100v3" and "XDS200" that was accepted. Several combinations have been tested and I ended up with dividing the menu in two options. One for XDS100v3 and one for XDS200. I guess we need to contact the providers of the Virus Scanners and ask what is going on.

Yes - Virus scanners should have a means for users to report false alarms.

Has this information been distributed to other TI departments?

I have had similar false alarms on other TI downloads (Tiva & Stellaris).

Thank you for fixing this quickly. I was not going to risk a virus so I was dead in the water. I didn't even know virus scanner put out false warnings.
