Bluetooth 4.0 and backward compatibility ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540, CC2564, CC2541

Hello,

I am working on building a prototype for a  Bluetooth accessory to control smartphone functions!

I am new to Bluetooth and accessory development, I got interested in some of the TI's solutions

http://www.ti.com/product/cc2540#feature

*The first 2 solutions are BT 2.1 based and we are looking for  solution with more than 15 GPIOs,I2C and USB interface and support for HFP and AVRCP profiles which the stellaris solution matches.

*But still I am not able to pin point the exact solution to be choosen between these BT 2.1 solutions.

*The BLE based solution seems awesome and latest, but backward compatibility seems to be the most important issue. It is ambiguous to me if BT 4.0 is backward compatible (or if) The TI based BLE solutions work with BT 2.1 solutions ??

*We are primarily targetting apple devices(iPhone) and there seems to be lot of discussions of Apple devices not working with SPP , but again it is fuzzy.Does all the above TI solutions work with iOS based devices ??
