CC2530-CC2591EM-RD: What is the max node is allow connect to the network for Z-stack3.0

Part Number: CC2530-CC2591EM-RD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: Z-STACK, CC2530, CC2538

Hi,

I been told by my supplier, the CC2530 with Z-stack 3.0 is allow to connect about 30 node only in a network.

Is it true?

Kindly advice

  • With CC2530 running Zigbee 3.0 coordinator, the network size is limited to ~30 nodes. This is due to the new features and security requirements that have been added by the Zigbee 3.0 over previous releases which require more RAM/FLASH. Preferred devices for Zigbee 3.0 coordiantor are CC26x2 or CC2538.
  • Hi Suyash Jain,

What you mean is 30 nodes to coordinator, right? How about router?
    For example:
    A network setup as below:
1 coordinator, 5 router and 25 end device.
Each of the router still allow to connect another 30 nodes in dept 2,right?
  • Hi Jeremy,

Z3.0 has mandated that Centralized networks such as the ones created by ZC, must perform a Trust Center Link Key update, which means that every device that joins the network must perform an update of the APS key used to join (either Default Key or InstallCode derived key), this causes that ZC must retain a key for every Z3.0 device that joins the network. ZC has ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX entries for all the joining devices that performs the update of the key (it is important to note that legacy devices does not use these entries as these would not perform the update of the key).
So the problem is not related to the topology, but a limitation on the number of keys that ZC may have, so routers would not solve it, but a ZC with more resources as Suyash is suggesting (CC26x2 or CC2538)

    Hope this help!
  • Hi Luis,

    Thanks for the information.
Would like to ask few more question as below:

    i. How many of key that CC2530 can hold? 30? Possible to increase the number of key?
ii. How many of key that CC26x2 and CC2538 can hold?
iii. If CC26x2 and CC2538 as a ZC, then the router & End device is remain CC2530 . Will it help to increase the number of node and is there any side effect?

The reason to ask so is because my product already build with CC2530,even the ZC. In order to compatible with other supplier, Z-3.0 is the must but only support 30 node is for sure insufficient.

    Kindly advice

    Best regards,
    Jeremy
