CC1310 launchpad range

Hello,

I just tested my two launchpads at 923 Mhz in long range mode and they started dropping messages once I got about 50 meters down the road. It's a residential area so there are houses are in between, but I thought with the advertised 10km range potential that it would easily at least make this distance.

I'm testing it on my desk at the moment and I'm getting a signal of ~30ish dBm with the two modules spaced about a metre apart.

Is this expected behavior?

Thanks in advance.

  • To be able to compare I placed two EMs on a table with the antennas 1.0 meter apart. The tests where done using the 50 kbps using SmartRF Studio.

I then got the following RSSI levels:
    868 MHz (whip antenna): - 21 dBm
    915 MHz (whip antenna): - 24 dBm

Remove the whip antenna on one side: Between -74 and -80 dBm

    868 MHz (PCB antenna): - 30 dBm
    915 MHz (PCB antenna): - 33 dBm

With the Launchpads you should get about -30 dBm 1 m apart.

It is a big difference in range if you have line of sight or not. If you use the excel sheet here: e2e.ti.com/.../375556 you will see that the expected range goes down a lot when both the Tx and Rx side are 1 m above ground and no line of sight (attenuation in form of wood, concrete etc)
