CC2430 Inverted F antenna

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2430, CC-ANTENNA-DK2

I imported the CC2430 reference design and antenna and using Genesys tool momentum to simulate the input return loss and using the parameter from the PCB, the S11 is looks pretty bad.  Hopefully the expert could give me some tips to improve the design.

  • The inverted F antenna is described here:
    www.ti.com/.../swru120c.pdf and www.ti.com/.../swra496a.pdf

We have used this antenna on a fair number of designs and have never seen any issues. Are you sure that your simulation setup is correct?
  • Initially, I imported the zip file in DXF format and the dimension is all incorrect. With the help of Genesys tools application engineer, we took the reference design remove all the circuit and kept the layout of the Inverted F antenna. When simulated the inverted F by itself in momentum, the S11 is ~-2dB. Is there a file for inverted F layout only?
  • The antenna design requires a certain GND size. If the GND plane configuration is incorrect in your simulation then the results will also be incorrect.

Simulate the complete board CC-Antenna-DK2 # 11 which has this particular antenna. The antenna has a large BW and if the S11 is -2 dB then the simulation setup is incorrect. This antenna is used in a large number of designs and is quite robust due to the large BW.
