Hi,

I have some questions related to the "SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3200 LaunchPad" https://estore.ti.com/cc3200-launchxl.aspx?DCMP=ep-con-ecs-cc3100launch&HQS=ep-com-ecs-cc3100launch-em-estore2-eu&sp_rid_pod4=MTYyOTg2NzU1ODAS1&sp_mid_pod4=46518930:

- how many GPIOs has this board?
- what free IDEs (unlimited versions) are supported to program this board?
- if using 2 AA alkaline batteries: what is the expected duration before batteries needs to be replaced (I know it depends on the use of the board) by average use
- as alternative to 2 AA alkaline batteries has this board a provisioning for a power supply (external)?

Hi Guy,

The links provided by Markel will definitely help you out with your technical queries. Regarding a free IDE, there are a few depending on how you wish to develop.

For a full blown Eclipsed based IDE, check out CCSv6. This is now completely free when using with the CC3200 LaunchPad - http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CCSv6

If you are interested in a higher level frameworks to develop with, there is Energia (http://energia.nu/) or emedXcode (http://embedxcode.weebly.com/) (CC3200 Support coming soon)

From the CCS link you mentioned:

"After you have completed installation and run CCS for the first time it generate a free license that works with XDS100, development boards with onboard debug or for MSP430 users a 16KB code size limited license is generated."

Does this mean there's a code size limit for CC3200 or not?

When using the CC3200 Launchpad, CCS does not limit the access to the 256kB of memory available, independently of the license.

Restrictions will however apply to a custom board that features the CC3200 or any other device. Those restrictions are either 16kB of code or 90 days from the initial installation of CCS.

Hi Lenio,

I am a little confused, I was under the impression from the statement above, that CCSv6 remains free even for custom boards that feature the CC3200, so long as you use the entry level XDS100 emulator. And that it is no longer free if you wish to use other emulators, such as the XDS200.

CCS is free when using TI development boards. Those typically feature XDS100 or equivalent interface. CCS will not be free when using custom boards.

Hi Lenio,

According to the following post by TI's CCS guru, Ki-Soo Lee. CCSv6 remains free even for custom boards, so long as you are using the XDS100 emulator.

Also, I am not aware of any TI development boards using a XDS100 type debug interface, most use some implementation of ICDI (In-Circuit Debug Interface). You can of course use JTAG or SWO on many of these development boards, which you could use the XDS100 emulator to perform, but CCSv6 would have no way of knowing if the device being programmed was a development board or a custom board.
