CC3220MODA: Flash programming over UART (USB) - CC3220SF Launchpad required?

Hello,

We are designing a custom PCB using CC3220SFMODA. We plan to use Uniflash to program the integrated 32 Mb FLASH. We have brought out the appropriate UART1 (46 and 47), nRESET and SOP.

We currently have a UART to USB converter in place for UART1. The idea is to plug in the board over USB and use Uniflash to program the Flash (similar to what we do for the launchpad).

From reading the production line guide, this is unlikely to work and we should be going via the XDS110 on the Launchpad. I am having a hard time following the document so could anyone explain in simple terms why we would need to do this?

Hi Michael,

You are correct. The XDS110 or the FT2232D are required for Uniflash to program the device, as these are the only two hardwares Uniflash supports.

As mentioned in the product line guide, the pin states must be externally pulled during the UART programming process at the right times to be successful. This, along with the bootloader, are effectively handled by the XDS110 (or FT2232D).

Hi,

If you need programming in production, you can use embedded programming using your USB -> UART converter. But make sure that your USB converter can work with 921600 baud-rate.

Hi

A couple of follow up questions on how we can avoiding using the launchpad.

1. Currently the USB/UART bridge we are using is the www.silabs.com/.../cp2102n-datasheet.pdf - Should we replace this with the FT2232D?

2. We have a separate XDS110 debug probe but assume this is not usable in place of the Launchpad?

We need all the Uniflash capabilities at this stage and will be looking into the embedded programming option down the line.

Hi Meenal,

A module is required to pull the Reset pin at the correct time when programming. If you are wanting to use Uniflash v4 the only two modules that are supported for this function are the XDS110 or the FTDI chip mentioned earlier.

You are probably better off using the XDS110, however, since there is already a lot more CC3220 support for it. You'd have to take a CC3200 .ccxml file and alter it for the FTDI chip. Mentioned in e2e.ti.com/.../2379018
