TPA3118D2: Confusion about the use of the mute pin of TPA31xxD2

Hi everyone,

I am confused about the use of the mute pin (pin 12) of the TPA31xxD2 series. In the datasheet slos708g, revised December 2017, on page 4 in the table "Pin Functions" it reads "HIGH = outputs HI-Z, LOW = outputs enabled". But on page 17, chapter 7.3.10: Short-Circuit Protection and Automatic Recovery Feature, it reads "pull the MUTE pin low ...". Shouldn't it read "pull the MUTE pin high ..."?

Maybe this is just a small thing since the following mentioning of the use of the FAULTZ signal in combination with an inverting transistor implies MUTE high, but nevertheless.

Please advise.

Hi David,

I think the "pull the MUTE pin low ...". should mean B-pin of triode. When the Fault happens, the B-pin of triode also pull to low, then the MUTE pin of TPA3116 device will be pull to high to mute the device.

Hi Derek,

If that is the way it was meant then the wording in my opinion is a bit inapt. Unfortunately I do not have an EVM (yet) to check what happens with the real thing but you are right, if the schematic is done like in the EVM, then when FAULTZ goes low, MUTE goes high. So to answer the question behind my question: To get the desired muting results, the table on page 4 is correct and chapter 7.3.10 has to be read, let's say, relaxed. Correct?
