THVD8000: Common Design for Power over RS485 and standard RS485

Part Number: THVD8000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1450

Hello,

Could you please provide your feedback on below queries:

i want to use two RS485 circuits on my board one for standard RS485 and other for power over RS485 circuit

1. Can we use single THVD8000 IC in both Cases(Power over RS485 and standard RS485 communication)

2.If in case it is not possible to use THVD8000 for both cases. what should the bus connection be, if i use two ICs one for Standard Rs485 IC and other for power over RS485?

Please refer below circuit for reference

  • Hi Rakesh,

    Thank you for your questions.

i want to use two RS485 circuits on my board one for standard RS485 and other for power over RS485 circuit

From my understanding, you want to use the same footprint on your PCB for two different circuit implementations. One for RS-485 communication, and one for power over RS-485.

    1. Can we use single THVD8000 IC in both Cases(Power over RS485 and standard RS485 communication)

No, a single THVD8000 would not fulfill both cases. If you are suggesting for example using a single THVD8000 communicating with another regular RS-485 transceiver such as THVD1450, then this would not be possible because there would be no way to demodulate the signal at the receiving end for proper interpretation of the RS-485 data. You would be able to transmit power over the lines though.

If instead you are communicating between two THVD8000 transceivers, then it is very possible to communicate RS-485 signals as well as power.

2.If in case it is not possible to use THVD8000 for both cases. what should the bus connection be, if i use two ICs one for Standard Rs485 IC and other for power over RS485?

THVD8000 can handle both power and RS-485 communication if transmission is between two THVD8000's.
