DS99R106: Replacement and obsolescence

Part Number: DS99R106
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS99R105, , DS90C124, DS90UR241, DS90C241, DS90UR124

Tool/software:

Hi all,

In my design I use DS99R106 and DS99R105 for RGB18bits display. this parts are now EOL and I need to find compatible parts (functionally, because footprint is different).

New parts must be compatible like below:

DS99R105 -> new Part DES

new Part SER -> DS99R106

new part SER -> new part DES

I found DS90UR124 / DS90UR241 and DS90C124 / DS90C241 to have similar pinouts. Are they compatible with DS99R106 / DS99R105 as described above? Do i need to disable some functions in the new parts for compatibility?

Are there newer parts with compatibility?

Thanks for the help.

Best regards

  • Hi Xiaowei,

    May I ask for some confirmations on the system parameters before confirming suggestions?

    Is the input and output data type of the system going to remain as:

    • Parallel LVCMOS input 18 bits (RGB666) > Parallel LVCMOS output 18 bits (RGB666) to display

    What is the expected clock input frequency for the input? Also, intended resolution if this information is available?

    • Depending on the incoming clock frequency limitations, some of the device pairs cover different ranges:
      • 5 MHz - 43 MHz range for DS90UR241 to DS90UR124
      • 5 MHz - 35 MHz range for DS90C241 to DS90C124
      • 5 MHz - 85 MHz PCLK range for DS90UB925 to DS90UB926

    We have some newer FPD3 parts that are suited for these types of inputs and outputs, the DS90UB925-Q1 SER, and the DS90UB926-Q1 DES.

    UB925DS90UB925Q-Q1 5 to 85 MHz 24-Bit Color FPD-Link III Serializer With Bidirectional Control Channel datasheet (Rev. D)

    UB926DS90UB926Q-Q1 5- to 85-MHz, 24-Bit Color FPD-Link III Deserializer With Bidirectional Control Channel datasheet (Rev. D)

    These may be the best fit depending on any additional system/display accommodations you may need, please review these per system specifications.

    Best,

    Miguel

  • Hi Miguel,

    The input data and output data type are Parallel LVCMOS 18 bits (RGB666). And the cable linking the 2 parts is 1 LVDS.

    The clock frequency is 25Mhz most of the use cases. But it can increase to 40MHz. If the DS90C241 is compatible, I can limit it to 35MHz.

    The resolution can be up to 1024x600.

    For compatibility issue I removed FPD3 parts from the list because the RGB pins are fixed on this parts and Serial stream is different because of additional bits concerning I2S and I2C on it. From my understanding a FPD2 serial stream will not understand a FPD3 serial stream and same for FPD2 to FPD3.

    Below my setting of the data pins:

  • Hi Xiaowei,

    The clock frequency is 25Mhz most of the use cases. But it can increase to 40MHz. If the DS90C241 is compatible, I can limit it to 35MHz.

    The resolution can be up to 1024x600.

    Assuming the resolution is 1024x600 @ 60 fps, the equivalent pixel clock would amount to 36.864 MHz over the link. It may be best to consider the options that are within this range should you wish to use the maximum resolution.

    • 5 MHz - 43 MHz range for DS90UR241 to DS90UR124
    • 5 MHz - 85 MHz PCLK range for DS90UB925 to DS90UB926
    For compatibility issue I removed FPD3 parts from the list because the RGB pins are fixed on this parts and Serial stream is different because of additional bits concerning I2S and I2C on it.

    For clarification, it appears that the part compatibility you are requestion is to fit all three of the use cases:

    DS99R105 -> new Part DES

    new Part SER -> DS99R106

    new part SER -> new part DES

    If this is the case, for the first two scenarios then the DS90UR241 / DS90UR214 would be best for Serial LVDS compatibility with 28-bit streams. For the case where there is the "new part SER -> new part DES", the FPD3 devices are compatible with each other on 35-bit streams. For the concern about the fixed RGB pins, it can be used for 18-bit color mode as well given the layout is changing.

    Can you confirm if only one of the parts is being replaced, or both?

    And the cable linking the 2 parts is 1 LVDS.

    In the case that you cannot change this cable if only one of the parts is changing, this makes sense.

    If both parts were to be changed, then a new connector, new layout, and new cable would be used for FPD3 devices.

    Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Best,

    Miguel

  • Hi Miguel,

    both parts are replaced but not at the same time.  So each of the 3 configurations will be existing.

    About Signal RAOFF, what value should I set it to work with DS99R105/DS99R106? Set to high (it seems DS99R10x doesn't support 2E7 LSFR setting)? Does it work in the config DS90UR241 -> DS90UR124 in this case?

    Best regards,

  • Hi Xiaowei,

    Please give me some time (1-2 business days) to check the backward compatibility of these two devices.

    Appreciate your patience,

    Miguel

  • Hi Xiaowei,

    Thank you very much for your patience,

    For devices DS99R105 and DS99R106 | DS90UR241 and DS90UR124's, I will continue checking to see if these parts are truly compatible. The protocol supported by both looks very similar but will need to be checked further to determine if data can be transmitted correctly.

    However, given that these devices are obsolete (no longer supported) and newer solutions exist for meeting this application, it is recommended to implement the new part SER -> new part DES option for FPD-Link III DS90UB925 > DS90UB926 for further longevity of the new design. Please let me know if you have any further questions on this.

    Best,

    Miguel
