[FAQ] Difference between Multiplexer/De-multiplexer and Analog Switch

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS5A3159-Q1, TMUX1209

FAQ: Logic and Voltage Translation > Logic Technology >> Current FAQ

Hi Team,

May I know difference is there between mux/demux IC's and analog switch IC's?

I'm comparing this in the context of chips with the same IO lines (for example a 1:2 or 2:1 mux/demux vs. a SPDT analog switch).

Regards

Hari

  • Hari,

Historically those terms mux/demux and analog switch IC categories had meaning if they included buffers but the analog switch/muxes today on Ti.com switch and multiplexers page are all passive FET switches.

Do you have the names of the devices you are comparing?

There are many different types of switches (usually the more common name for 1:1 or 2:1 types) and multiplexers (usually more common name for 3:1,4:1, 8:1, etc. types).  However, the way theses passive FET switches/mux devices are designed are identical except for how they connect the inputs and outputs of the switches to create the different configurations.

There are 3 main types of switch architectures: NFET, transmission gate (NFET in parallel with PFET) and NFET + charge pump but all of these are bi directional for the basic concept below fond on our FAQ page.  More detail can be found in this app note Selecting the Right Texas Instruments signal switch.

This chart is from our FAQ post that shows there are many names that all mean the same thing for switches depending on what vocabulary people are used to using.

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Hi Adam,

    Thank you very much.
May I know the difference between TS5A3159-Q1 and TMUX1209. Which one will be fast.

    Regards
    Hari
  • Hari,

I'm not sure what you mean by "fast".   Would you be able to describe what you would like to connect to these parts and what in the application needs to be "fast".

There is a red compare button you may use on the ti.com switch search tool to generate the comparison below.

The main difference between these devices is one is AEC Q100 rated and the other is the configurations are different.  TMUX1209 is a 4:1 2-channel devices and the TS5A3159-Q1 is a 2:1 1-channel device.

    TMUX1209

    TS5A3159-Q1

Both devices have similar ~100MHz bandwidth so they will support "fast" clock signals ~35MHz

or both devices the time it takes to switch from one switch path to the other so the can toggle between logic states "fast" ~30ns

    Thank you,

    Adam
