AM2634-Q1: QSPI flash for both configuration storage and program storage

Tool/software:

I am using this TMDSCNCD263 board and this is the IO Extender TMDSHSECDOCK.

I want to use QSPI based flash memory for our project requirement, As per AM2634 evolution board one QSPI Flash is attached with QSPI.

I have few question Kindly Guide me on this

1.) Can i use this QSPI Flash Based memory for Data storage as well as program storage(Flash of Am2634)?

2.) Also can i interface another Flash Memory on Same QSPI Bus for data data storage?

Single On Board Flash part ? or 2 Flash parts ?

If you intend to use two flash parts, then you have it on another CS. You need to change the chip select via SW during the run time to access another flash part during the run time.

For Single flash, you need to logically partition your flash to use as Code/Data.

I Agree with your point, we can use same flash for Code/Data, but now question is what if Microcontroller want to read flash memory while application is running because as per my understanding microcontroller fetch the next instruction from the flash memory while executing the current instruction that's means it is continuously reading the memory and QSPI bus got engaged with MCU to get the next instruction from the flash

Does this MCU not use the flash to read the next instruction while running the application as happen in general MCU's?

Hi swati Sharma,

The AM2634 device only supports execute from TCM or RAM memories. The XiP capability of the flash is not enabled.

Hence, for this device, the execution / instruction fetch will always happen from RAM memories. However, due to memory map mode support on the QSPI controller, the CPU can access it via data bus.

As per my understanding TCM memory is used for instruction fetch and execution while running the application,

QSPI flash is used once (while boot time only).

We can another QSPI on same bus with different chip select.

Kindly confirm my points.

Hi,

Yes. You can use different flash on different CS and configure the same in the respective CS configuration registers.
