LAUNCHXL-F28379D: JTAG communication issues

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-F28379D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSCNCD28379D, ISOUSB111, ISOUSB111DWXEVM

Hi,

I am using the LaunchXL- F28379D for controlling a 300 kW Three-phase inverter.

For testing the code, I am connected to the onboard JTAG connector CON1.

When the DC input to the inverter is greater than 200 V, the JTAG communication fails.

I used an isolated fiber optic cable for connecting the computer to the LaunchXL. This kept the communications alive till 400 V.

Q1: Are there any onboard chips recommended for solving this issue of communication loss?

  • Hi Snambiar,

We do not have any onboard chips recommended for solving these kinds of issues. You did well in using an isolated fiber optic cable. I'll loop in one of our systems experts to see if they have any other suggestions.

  • Hi Marlyn,

I too have facing same issues.

  • Hi,

The F28379D LaunchPad is not intended to be used for such High Voltage applications. The isolation strength between the emulator side (USB connection) and hot (target) side is not good enough. JTAG disconnection or damage to your PCB / computer (through USB port) is completely possible.

The TMDSCNCD28379D hardware offers better JTAG isolation.

I used an isolated fiber optic cable for connecting the computer to the LaunchXL. This kept the communications alive till 400 V.

You added some additional isolation, which may help. You could also look at using a USB isolator, like ISOUSB111, between the board and PCB.

  • Hi,

Thank you for the information. I have ordered an ISOUSB111DWXEVM for testing and will update you on the results.

Q2:Is there a way to interface to the LaunchXL F28379D using a Blackhawk USB200 JTAG EMULATOR - BH-USB-200?

  • Hi,

Q2:Is there a way to interface to the LaunchXL F28379D using a Blackhawk USB200 JTAG EMULATOR - BH-USB-200?

Only way I can think of requires soldering some wires onto the JTAG signals / pads going to the F28379D device on the PCB.
