DRV8816: Drv8816 heat problem at 2.2A output

Dear Sir/Ms.

Because DRV8874/DRV8876/DRV8873 is out of stock, my customer wants to find replacement materials. His motor specification is 24V, 3A (Max continuous), brushed motor. Looking for TI website, he found DRV8816. DRV8816 has current output detection. This is the function he wants. But he was worried about the heat problem, DRV8816 impedance 0.83ohm current 2.2A, generating power 4.0172W. Attached is the motor test report he got, he needs about 2A output. His worst ambient temperature is 40 degrees C. Based on your experience, can the DRV8816 output a continuous current of 2A? Can you give us some suggestions?

The IC temperature will depend heavily on the PCB design. this document shows how much different parameters affect the total temperature of the IC. As you can see, PCB design has a strong influence on the IC temperature. Power dissipation has a weak influence. However, it will have an impact on the total temperature. Therefore, it is important to make sure the PCB has enough free copper area underneath the IC to keep the temperatures below the maximum operating temperature of the device. The following resources below provide some helpful tips for designing PCB with good thermal performance.

The IC should be able to handle 4W of power as long as there is good PCB layout. If you'll like to perform tests, you can use the DRV8816 evaluation board and run it at the desired current and voltage and observed the temperatures.
