DRV8210: Can DRV8210 be used for ERM actuator driving?

Part Number: DRV8210
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8601,

Hello guys,

One of my customers is considering using DRV8210 to driver Eccentric Rotating Mass (ERM) actuator.
And they are considering using DRV8601 too because DRV8601 is a designed device for ERMs.
But DRV8210 price is lower than DRV8601. They want to reduce their product cost.
At this moment, they have the following questions. Could you please give me your reply?

Q1. What is main different point between DRV8210 and DRV8601 for ERM driving?
Q2. What problem will be happened when DRV8210 is used for ERM driving?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

Q1. What is main different point between DRV8210 and DRV8601 for ERM driving?

The DRV8601 is designed specifically for ERMs and LRAs. The DRV8210 is a standard H-bridge driver for BDC motors. However, the DRV8210 can still be used for other loads such as ERMs. Another difference is the DRV8210 does not have the overdrive capability if the DRV8601. The DRV8210 can drive each output to either near VM or near GND (voltage across ERM will be either +VM or -VM). You can still control the ERM but in a much simplistic way compared to the DRV8601.

Q2. What problem will be happened when DRV8210 is used for ERM driving?

I don't see major problems with using the DRV8210 expect the limitation I described in my previous answer above.

Let me know if you or customer have any questions about the DRV8210 or pricing questions. You can place an order for a DRV8210EVM on behalf of the customer if they wish to evaluate with the ERM.
