TPS61202: High inrush/startup peak current / Strange behavior.

Part Number: TPS61202

One of the problems is that the DC converter has a very high peak input current (>1.5A or more) at power-up to start correctly.

The other problem is, if he DC controller does not start correctly, the DC controller consume approx. 900mA at the input (internal voltage collapses to 1V) and only approx. 2.5V is reached at the output and the controller becomes warm.

- why does the controller has such a high input peak current >1.5A, although only about 60mA (load) is required at the output. (Soft start limit should be. max 400 mA).

- why does the controller show such a strange behavior that it draws a high input current when it cannot start correctly.

(we are using a regular AA NiMh Battery for Supply)

What would be the best configuration of this DC converter to get a voltage of 5V with an AA NiMH battery that can drive at least a load of about 60mA.

  • Hi Bernhard,

    - why does the controller has such a high input peak current >1.5A, although only about 60mA (load) is required at the output. (Soft start limit should be. max 400 mA).

400mA is the average current limit, so peak current may increase to 1.5A.

why does the controller show such a strange behavior that it draws a high input current when it cannot start correctly.

Could you please provide start-up waveforms, like VIN, L, VOUT node voltage? This will be more helpful for us to analyze the problem. Thanks.
