BQ51050B: Would it also charge LiFePo4 ?

Part Number: BQ51050B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24072, , BQ25170, BQ25171-Q1, BQ51013B

Hi dear people,

I have a working charging system using a BQ51050B and a BQ24072 to charge a LiPo 1-Cell 500mA battery.

Because of safety reasons, I would like to change to a LiFePo4, 600mA battery.

I wonder if it could be possible to keep the system like it is, by readjusting the charge limiting resistors on both devices.

Are there other considerations that would force me to redesign everything?
The most important is: Would it be possible to have wireless charging?

Best regards

Gustavo

  • Hi Gustavo

I would recommend switching to LiFePo4 charger, see BQ25171-Q1 or BQ25170.

The BQ51013B, wireless power 5V supply can be paired with the above to devices for a dual input WP or USB.

Sorry but do not have LiFePo4 version of BQ51050B.

Are there other considerations that would force me to redesign everything?

Do not recommend mixing charger solutions / chemistry.

  • Hi Bill,

    Thanks for the quick answer.
I noticed and I am glad for the suggested solution of using the BQ51013B as source for the BQ25171-Q1 or BQ25170.

    Wish you a nice day,

    best regards from Germany!

    Gustavo
