DRV8343-Q1: Reverse Battery Protection

Hello,

The section "8.3.5.10 Reverse Supply Protection" in DRV8343-Q1's data sheet describes how to protect against a reverse battery connection. But, can a circuit below that uses only a diode work as protection?

The purpose of this connection is to reduce the number of parts. A voltage to the VDRAIN pin is taken from the VM to prevent a false V_DS detection of the high side when a V_BAT varies. Is there any concern about this protection circuit?

Hi Yokota-san,

Yes, this can work. This is a cost effective method but has much lower efficiency, potential overheating, and usable in small battery ranges.

Does it have a negative impact on the DRV8343-Q1's operation, too? I guess its V_DS overcurrent trip voltage will be affected by the diode's V_F and it's just one of the concerns. Anything else?

Hi Yokota-san,

It will not have a negative impact, only just the VDRAIN voltage for VDS overcurrent protection if VDRAIN is less than VBAT by VF. VM and VDRAIN should be no more than 5V apart.
