Re: AN: Antenna Selection Guide (AN058)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1271

Hi Richard,

I need some clarification regarding antenna sharing with WLAN/BT combo modules provided by TI, for example WL1271 (WiLink 6.0). I knew that TI is providing WLAN/BT coexistence support for these modules but need some more information on establishing simultaneous connections (WLAN and BT) using shared antenna for both modules. Case scenario for the above is like this: i want to receive VOIP call over WLAN and retransmit that received voice to bluetooth headset using bluetooth module using the same antenna. I understood the mechanism using two different antennas for both and establishing simultaneous connections but could not understand with shared antenna. Kindly provide some information/clarification regarding this.

Regards,

Sathish

I assume you are using two different devices, one for Bluetooth and one for WIFI.   The biggest problem I see is not with the antenna matching.  That can be handled using a directional coupler or RF switch.  What you should be aware of is the timing of the two devices.  You do not want both to transmit at the same time.   This will cause problems with the front end of both devices.  Since the devices on the same board the power transmitted from one device will saturate the receiver of the other device.   So timing is critical.

We have helped many companies, like Microsoft and Taiyo Yuden with WiFi and Bluetooth technology.   We can offer to help you with your radio development so you have an easier time with it.  If you are interested please give us a call and I would be happy to help.
