TAS3251: "Ultra-HD" Where is 192KHz support?

Part Number: TAS3251
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5242, TPA3251

The TAS3251 indicates it can detect sampling rates above 96 KHz (See spec sheet Table 26. Sample Rate Detection), but the product does not claim to actually support anything over 96 KHz.

This product got me excited. The only digital input part with "Ultra-HD" in the name, I thought that maybe it would meet the requirements of Dolby's or DTS's "Ultra-HD" audio formats. But, sadly, it does not. (As, they require 192 KHz support.)

Can somebody at TI commend if there are plans for a part in the over 50W/channel range with 192 KHz support in the road-map?

  • Hi Chris,

I apologize for the misunderstanding, you are correct that currently the TAS3251 does not support 192 kHz. The ultra HD was in reference to the THD+N and SNR performance.

To support 192 kHz you could use a DAC like the PCM5242, with the TPA3251, which would have similar if not a little better performance than the TAS3251.

  • Hi Justin,

The DAC + Class-D solution will most likely be the direction we go again with our coming architecture iteration.

I hope that in the future, TI will bring 192 KHz support into this family for those of us that have it as a requirement.l
