High Speed Data Coverters v2.0 loading firmware

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS4249EVM, TIDA-00069

hello

After i connect the TSW1400 with ADC or DAC and select the model of the ADC or DAC, it always failure to  update the firmware and sometimes the error is "the JTAG CHAIN WAS BROKEN WHILING LOADING THE FIRMWARE"  .

under this situation ,i will disconnect the boad ,then connect with the boad ,and load the firmware again and again ,but i could only load the firmware successful  after i try this many many times.   why ?

  • Hi Tao Chang,

This may be related to a problem we see on a few board+USB combinations.  Please refer to a message from another thread I copied here:

"For the broken JTAG chain error, could you please check one thing on your TSW1400 board?  Look to see if there is a resistor installed on position R55.  We have been removing this resistor on recent build of this board but earlier builds of the board did have the resistor installed.  The presence of the resistor is not supposed to cause any problem, but on some boards it might be causing the USB chip to not drive a signal level correctly.  The resistor is only needed if you wish to use an Altera FPGA programmer which is not something we normally expect a user to want to do after the board is shipped.  But on two boards we had that had the broken JTAG error we found that removing R55 (the 1k pull down on FPGA_TCK) fixed the problem."

R55 is located on the back of the board near the FPGA balls/vias.  Let me know if you have the ability to remove this - if not we can help provide you a replacement.

  •  Hi Ken

first Thank you for your help .

After i installed the "High Speed Data Converter Pro v2.0" .can  i  find the ADC or DAC's  firmware and then load it  manually ?  and where is the firmware?

Secondly  can i write the firmware myself and then send it to FPGA directly by the JTAG connector connected with PC .  if it can be . can you recommend me a written compiler for     the firmware?

  • Hi Tao Chang,

Can you confirm if your board has the R55?  I want to make sure that is taken care of first.  If you don't have the facilities to remove this resistor, please let me know and we can swap your board out for you.

The TSW1400 directory contains a firmware folder which has the compiled bit files for the various interfaces.  You can load any rbf format firmware using the Download Firmware option within the INstruments Options tab of the GUI.  You will need to have a compile rbf file to do this.  You can look in the device.ini file to determine which rbf is used for each device.  Some devices share the same format and the same rbf file.  The GUI will download the firmware through the USB cable - a JTAG port is implemented on the FTDI USB chip.

By default the on board JTAG connector cannot be used as the USB JTAG is being used.  You may make some solder changes to move the JTAG selection resistors if needed, however we do not suggest doing this and we cannot support these changes.  If you do want to load in any new firmware I would suggest using the Download Firmware feature in the GUI.  Please see this post on using the TSW1400 as a Stratix IV development tool.

Look under the applications notes.  There should be a link to an FPGA app note and associated project files for the TSW1400.  This project was developed in the Altera Quartus ebvironment.

  • Hi Ken

first I'm sure that the boad has the R55(1k).

As you have said that the  resistor is only needed if you wish to use an Altera FPGA programmer .But I just  want to do this to give the TSW1400  the ability to connect with the ADC and  DAC EVM at the same time . so if i remove the R55 ,can i program the FPGA a suitable firmware to have the ability to connect the 1400  with ADC and DAC at the same time ?

  • Hi Tao Chang,

Please help us confirm if the R55 is in place and then you can remove it.  We believe this is the failure mode, but it would be good to confirm.

If you follow the FPGA app note you can see how to connect an ADC and a DAC to the TSW1400 at the same time.  The provided Altera Quartus project will give you some example code as well.  The project is loaded through the HSDC Pro GUI using the Download Firmware option so you do not need to have a separate JTAG cable - the GUI will use the existing mini USB cable to push in the FPGA image (it has the JTAB implemented on the mini USB cable).  Please have a look at the app note and let me know if you still have any questions.

  • Hi Tao Chang,

Can you confirm if the R55 resistor was the problem and if removing it helped?  This will help us determine if there is another problem.  Thanks for your help in resolving this problem.

    Ken.

  • Hello Ken,

At the link you provide I do not see the application note and the FPGA project file for TSW1400. Are those files removed?

    Thanks,

    Ruikang

  • Ruikang,

Please try this link  - this should have the Altera .qar design files and the applications note/TI-Design.
