Code Composer Studio v5 - Limited Release

You are invited to participate in evaluation of CCSv5 – LR(Limited Release). CCSv5  - LR is targeted at users that need to:

  • Linux application development
  • Linux host based application development
  • Would like to use latest Eclipse IDE.

This release has not been validated on MCU devices (C2000, Stellaris, MSP430 and Cortex R4).

Linux is continuously increasing in importance and CCS4.x  does not offer tooling to allow run mode Linux application debug. CCS v5 – LR is addressing this need by providing a single environment where GDB can be used for run mode debug and CCS JTAG support can be used for kernel/driver debug within the same development environment. CCSv5 is using the same underlying debugger, emulation, simulation, CGT, XDC, BIOS components as CCS v4.2. The main differences focus around user interface, due to the upgraded version of Eclipse. Also, many TI developed plugins are being migrated to CCSv5. However, there are some differences between CCSv4.x and CCSv5 – LR (listed here). CCSv5 – LR is not a general replacement/upgrade to CCSv4.x, there will be a CCSv5 –GA release in 3Q11 that will replace CCSv4.

CCS v5 – LR is based on latest Eclipse release (Helios). CCSv5 contains a completely stock version of Eclipse, thus offering a much wider range of compatible 3rd party plugins and future upgradeability when Eclipse service releases are made available.

CCSv5 Mediawiki contains the download links and information on how to get started with CCSv5.

We ask that you use forums with “CCSv5” tag to get support and provide feedback. (During posting of the message, click on “Select Tags” and choose CCSv5)

Thank you!

  • This is a nice achievement in CCS world. Thanks Martin!

    Cheers,

  • Will CCSv5 support multiple cores of the develoment platform to speed up simulation?

That is, will simulated threads excute on separate processor cores?

    Gary

  • Gary,

Existing TI Simulation  technology does not leverage multiple cores of the Host machine. The technology changes required are still under R&D.

Having said that, the availability of Dual / multiple cores will improve some bit of performance of simulations due to the fact that other heavy apps/OS activities can be served by the other core and  simulations  will relatively perform better due to lesser context switches for the core on which its running.

  • Any updates to the following old statement for the new Oct 25, 2010 LR code? Or maybe more specifically for the C2000 family?

This release has not been validated on MCU devices (C2000, Stellaris, MSP430 and Cortex R4).

  • Hi,

Unfortunately no. Since MCU customers already have an IDE alternative in CCSv4, the focus right now is to support all the Linux-based devices that can rely only on CCSv5 for Linux debugging.

However, please stay tuned for any news on this subject.

    Best regards,

    Rafael

  •

A beta release of CCSv5 that has been validated on MCUs will be avilable in 1Q11.

  • The CCS 5 wiki shows that the downloads are disabled and off-line until November... when I should check back?

  • Nov 9 would be a good time to check again.

  • The CCSv5 wiki page states:

Prior to the release of CCSv5.0, AM37xx SDK customers were given a Preview Edition release of CCSv5.0. The Preview Edition release does not have any JTAG debug support and is based on Galileo SR2(Eclipse 3.5.2, CDT6.0.2). This product is no longer supported, and these customers will be upgraded to CCSv5.0 in Dec. 2010.

I realize that the Linux beta preview releases of CCSv5.0 have been targeted at GDB users, as opposed to JTAG, but I'm not quite sure about the "no longer supported" comment. Does this mean if we download the current release from the wiki that it: (1) Isn't supported; or (2) doesn't support the AM37xx devices?

Can someone help to better explain what this comment means? Also, are there more details on the upcoming (Dec 2010) release date?

    Thanks

  • If you get an SDK that comes with AM37xx board and install CCS that comes with that SDK you will have CCS v5 Preview Edition. That version of CCS does not have any JTAG support. It does have some additional open source tooling integrated to allow use of GCC and QT development, i.e. focusing on linux application developers. CCSv5 that you can get from CCSv5 wiki has support for JTAG debug and rest of tooling similar to CCSv4. However, the product install on CCSv5 wiki does not include GCC, QT or other open source tooling that might be useful for application development. Updated AM SDK will have all these rolled into one release. I am not sure of the exact date for updated AM SDK.

  • Does CCS v.5 for Windows support Spectrum Digital Emulator XDS560R? I couldn't start debug session on eZDSP2808 with it. However, with onboard usb emulator all works correct.

  • CCSv5 (on windows) has the same board/emulator support as CCSv4.2. CCSv4.1.2 is the last release that supports SD XDS560R. See information on SD site (software features) column.
