Use CC2541 SensorTag without CC2540 USB Dongle

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540, CC2541

Hello,

I just received the SensorTag kit and thought maybe I could connect it to my PC, which has Bluetooth 4.0.  When I search for devices, it shows up.  I tried to add a related COM port with the device, but I get the error: "The device you selected does not have a serial port service running."  Is there any way around this so I can enable the COM port and get the BLE device monitor going?

Thank you.

  • Hi Fahad,

I assume you try to use the built-in BT4.0 chipset to access Bluetooth low energy functionality with the Device Monitor PC Tool? I do not think that would be possible because the Device Monitor is designed to use a COM port to access Bluetooth low energy functionality. That can be achieved by using a CC2540USB Dongle with HostTestRelease firmware which is communicated to via a virtual UART over USB (CDC).

    Best Regards

  • Nick, thanks for your prompt response.

The bluetooth chipset on my machine can be configured to use a COM port (like to connect to a phone for data, etc).  It just doesn't work in the way I described.  I was hoping someone had figured out a way to do it.

  • I'm new to this and have a similar question. I don't have the CC2540 USB dongle but a plugable Bluetooth USB Adapter that has Bluetooth 4.0 LE. It shows that the BLE host is connected in the BLE Device Monitor but it won't let me scan and locate the Sensor tag. Is there something special that the dongle has for this application or will the adapter I'm using work?

  • Hi there I am having a similar problem. I am using CC2541 SensorTag and a Bluetooth ble 4.0 usb device on a laptop running win7. I can set the com port to com4 and the BLE Device monitor software comes up with BLE host connected BLE host:com4 111520 baud hardware flow In the event log BLE host:com4 111520 baud hardware flowc I have tried scanning and clicking the cc2541. best regards Roger
