TMDSHVMTRPFCKIT - Lower voltage

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE

Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying the "High Voltage Motor Control and PFC Developer’s Kit" together with the AC motor. For several reasons, I'd like to run the board with a DC link voltage as low as 60-80V for the beginning (and consequently power it from a DC supply). I know that this will significantly lower the motor output power/speed, however this would not be a problem.

Will the board and motor still work with such a low voltage or is there any limitation I hadn’t thought of so far?

Thanks in advance

Conrad

  • Conrad,

The board will work at 60V bus, but the motor supplied with the kit is rated for ~200V ac and will have trouble if the DC bus is so low... it typically needs atleast 100Vac min to spin.

Also note we provide jumpers on the phase voltage sensing for this particular case, when low voltage rating motor is used.

So in a nutshell board will work, the motor we ship with the kit will not, your motor for that rating will work.

  • Hi,

thank you very much for response!

Regarding the minimal bus voltage: Will 100Vac be sufficient to spin the motor with a low inertia load?
Even though Volts/Hertz control requires a voltage boost at low motor speed, I did not expect it to be as high as 50% of the rated voltage.
I still have trouble to understand why such a "high" voltage is required to spin the motor with reduced speed/load.

Any idea where I can find the specs of the ac motor shipped with the kit? (HVACIMTR)
Example projetcs provided by controlSuite define some motor parameters but as far as I can see they are for a "1/4 hp Marathon Motor" which seems to be a different motor!?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello,

It is the same motor (Marathon 5K33GN2A). Also, it is not shipped with the kit, we should buy this motor separately.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Maria,

thanks for the information, this way I can lookup the parameters from the example projects!
