Stellaris and Code Composer Studio License

A few months back, I ordered a couple Stellaris Launchpads, only to find they were out of stock after I ordered. Over a month later, the back ordered devices came in and I've been very excited to dive in. I currently have an MSP430 based design that I have been hoping to migrate over to the Stellaris due to the extra processing power.

However, when I downloaded the whole StellarisWare and accompanying CCS v5.2, I have problems. For starters, during the CCS installation, the progress box that lists what files are being installed/actions being taken/etc. will repeatedly say "Installation Failed" for at least 10 lines, then it goes back to installing other things. After a while of installing, it will, again, repeatedly say "Installation Failed". However, the final installation finishes and gives me the option to launch CCS, which I do.

Once inside I launch, what seems to be, CCS, I'm greeted with the Eclipse splash screen with no reference to CCS. In the editor, again, there is no reference to CCS and the options to open a project is grayed out... What gives?

One final note... Am I NOT going to be able to use CCS with the Stellaris, except for a 30-day trial? I'm a student and I can't afford a $500 license just to play around with a $15 Launchpad...

  • Hello Philip,

I actually encountered a similar issue not too long ago while upgrading to the latest version of CCS (5.3.00090).   To resolve this issue, I ran an uninstall for CCS 5,  deleted the CCS5 directory (C:\TI\ccs5), then ran the installation again.   In your case, since CCS didn't install completely, you can most likely skip the first step.  As an added suggestion, I would also make sure UAC is off and run the installer as an administrator.   I hope this helps.   If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

    Regards,

    S.

  • Hi Philip

just to add a couple comments.  The wiki below explains the licensing options and you should be able to use the free limited license with the launchpad.  Note however if you were using the code size limited license for the msp, you will either need two installations (one for each license type) or to dynamically (assuming v5) switch between the types by launching license setup from Help->Code COmposer Studio Licensing Information ... upgrade tab

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Licensing_-_CCS

    Do keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa,

What "Free" license are you referring to? The Bundled License that comes with dev boards? I only have a Stellaris Launchpad. Is there another license type that will allow me to program this Stellaris Launchpad for LONGER than 30 days?

    S.A.

As for the method that I'm using to install... I downloaded the "EK-LM4F120XL-CCS-733.zip" and opened the Software/CCS folder, then executed  "ccs_setup_5.2.1.00018.exe" within it. However, I did what you said and uninstalled my previous version, then deleted the TI folder. I have gotten the same result with a fresh install 3 times, now.

I should note that I DO have an installation of an older version of eclipse on my desktop. This is for editing java, but my current CCS install is not in the same location. In fact, at the start of the new CCS installation, it gives me the option to install as a plugin with a current installation of eclipse (or something to that effect). If I select it and browse to the eclipse folder, it says that it needs version 8 of cdt... It sounds like my current eclipse is out of date. A little bit more info is that when I try to start CCS and eclipse pops up, that version of eclipse is NOT the same as the version I use for java on my desktop.

Well, crud... You were right about turning of UAC. That was it... again. I should have known that. Come to think of it, I had a similar problem 2 years ago when I first installed CCS v4 on a laptop and started with the MSP430. I finished the NEW installation with UAC off, and when I launched CCS I was finally greeted with the CCS splash instead of Eclipse.

    Lisa,

Now that I S.A. helped me fix the installation issue, I DO indeed see the "Free License" option that explicitly states it should work with the Stellaris.

Thank you, both, for the help in resolving this. Once again, E2E to the rescue. I'm very happy.

  • Hi Philip,

great, very happy to hear and thanks for the update.

    All the best with development.
