Can DP83630 be an IEEE 1588 master clock device? If not, are there other devices supporting it?

DP83630 supports the Precision Time Protocol (PTP). TLK111 also supports it. Can TLK111 be an IEEE 1588 master clock device?

    Hi Daisuke,

    IEEE 1588 master clocks are normally GPS or calibrated atomic clocks. The IEEE 1588 standard uses a BMC (Best Master Clock) algorithm to determine which clock in your system will be used to have all other clocks synchronize to. 

    I will check with my colleagues about a PHY clock acting as a grandmaster clock and get back to you.

    I'm sorry. I may ask the irrelevant question because I am not familiar with IEEE 1588.

    Can DP83630 be used for an IEEE 1588 master clock device? If not, is there an ethernet PHY which can be used for it?

    Hi Daisuke,

    What is the application that you are trying to have this implemented in?

    For a point-to-point type system that does not require global sync, the DP83640 is a great choice for implementing IEEE 1588 Master mode. The DP83640 can act as a Master and have all other clocks in the system sync to it. The device can also act as a bridge clock and sync to a master clock and then pass along sync to lower clocks in its local system.

    Do you explain the features of the One-Step Operation and the Receive Timestamp Insertion, which are supported by DP83630 or DP83640?
     
    In addition, I have other question.

    "2.3 Key IEEE 1588 Features" in the DP83630 datasheet describes as follows:

    "The DP83630 provides features for controlling the clock operation in Slave mode. The clock value can be updated to match the Master clock in several ways."

    Does this mean that the clock value cannot be updated to match the grandmaster clock in RGMII master mode? Is the clock value not adjusted automatically?

    In the SDG you will find information about 1-step operation and receive timestamp insertion.
