LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1: Using SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2 to trace BLE5 packets

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PACKET-SNIFFER

Hi

In the this thread, Bjørn said the sinffer2 doesn't support BLE5 feature,

We would like to double check whether we can't use(CC26X2 launchpad + sinffer2 tool) to trace BLE5 packets.

Currently, we used (CC26X2 launchpad + sinffer2 tool) to trace another one CC26X2 Launchpad(project zero), but we only can receive ADV_IND packets.

Sinffer2 Version : 1.8

Wireshark version : 3.0.x?

Thanks.

BR

Trevor

  • Hi Trevor,

No updates to PACKET-SNIFFER 2 have been made since Bjørn's description in the aforementioned thread, hence the BLE5 status remains the same.

  • Hi Ryan,

We still can't understand, Regarding debugging section in "TI BLE5-Stack User’s Guide", it mentions : using packet sniffer can track BLE advertisement packets as well as an established BLE connection.

So the packet sniffer tool only can trace the advertisement packets? If you want to trace the connection events, we can't use a packet sniffer tool. Right?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Trevor,

We could probably make some changes to that page to make it more clear. For BLE5, I believe that you will be able to see advertisement packets, but will not be able to follow a connection. There are many other packet sniffers on the market that you may look to if you need more advanced sniffing done. Our packet sniffer tool is made to be a low cost supplement, but has no where near the complexity to replace a full blown sniffer. The most common BLE sniffers are made by Ellisys and Frontline.

  • Hi Alec,

Got it, thank you for your information.

  • Hi Alec,

Regarding BLE sniffers, Could you help provide/suggest the model name for Ellisys and Frontline.

Do you know the approximate price?

  • Trevor,

The one I currently have in my office is an Ellisys Bluetooth Explorer  400, but I would recommend you assess your requirements and discuss with Frontline/Ellisys what best fits your needs.

    Best Regards,
    Alec
