I am not sure if bq26100 uses the same method. I would stick to the documentation for bq40z80. I hope you have read bq40z80 TRM section 15.2 onwards. Make sure the padding is correct.

Yes, this device is commonly used for battery authentication. The other option available is the BQ26100. They may want to take a look at both of these to see which is a better fit for their needs.
