    For my application driving a parallel DAC, it was as simple as putting all the data on a Port (I used 4) and quickly strobing another GPIO.

    Do you know we have the UART BSL that can download into the USB BSL area? For more detail you can refer to this appnote But for your case, to add debug message I think you can define a proper data format that can include the debug message.
