afe4400 EVM No Connection with device

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE4404, AFE4400

I am unable to communicate with the device.  I installed the GUI after the installation I plugged in the USB.  Windows 8 immediately recognized it as a virtual serial port (I have used the PC for other development on the MSP430 and as well as the LM4f120)  It did not lable the port as afe...  The port number was 6, which I raised to 30.  Still to no avail.  I tried to update the driver by pointing to the TI folder as suggested but windows claims that the driver is the lastest version.

Please advise.

  • Irving,

When you try to update the driver, do you have the option to select "Have Disk"? This option usually comes when you say "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer"

You can also look at section 3.3.1 of our AFE4404 User's Guide for help using Win8 with our GUIs.

  • No, I do not have the option to select "have disk"  I can select the location of the driver.  I point it to the USB driver under x86 program files, Texas Instruments, AFE4400.  Microsoft then checks to update and says that the "best software for your device is already installed".  This is now happening to me on two different computers.

    Again the process used was:

    1.  Installed the GUI software as directed.

    2.  Reset the computer as directed.

    3. Plugged in the module (SPO2-FE EVM Rev A )

    4. PC immediately recognized this as a Serial Device.  (I have used other MSP430 products and have previously installed USB software for them)

    5. Modified the serial port to a higher value.  Specifically 30.

    6. Started GUI software.

    7. Answer PC message to allow software to run.

    8. I see a green message on the bottom of the screen saying connect.

    9. I receive a "pop-up" message saying that a communication error occurred.  This occurs almost immediately after the message on the bottom of the screen says connected.

    10.  Tried running the GUI as admin but this did not help.

  • Really need some help if anyone knows what to try.  I have an angry client that is waiting for us to continue development

  • Irving,

    Can you do the following?

    1. Go to your device manager

    2. Where the EVM shows up as a serial device, right click and say "Update Driver"

    3. From there click "Browse my computer for driver software"

    4. From here click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

    5. Then click "Have Disk..." You should have this option in the lower right hand corner.

    6. Then go to the location of the driver for the EVM.

  • Thank you, the device driver is now installed however the GUI software still doesn't work.  Reviewing the user guide, I see that the firmware version I have is 1.2 and the GUI is 2.0.  According to the user manual I should download firmware version 1.3.  Trying to do this I receive the following error:

Other symptons.  After beginning the software, I see that the registers are loaded.  I then takes four minutes before I see the next display that allows me to do something.  Trying to run the ADC capture does not work.  Finally, the system is running under windows 10.  I tried running the software as admin but this did not change the results.

  • Resolved the problem.  After running the GUI software,  selecting update firmware, and obtaining the error message; I closed the GUI software and opened the BSL loader located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\AFE44x0SPO2EVM GUI folder.  The GUI software apparently puts the microcontroller software into its loader allowing the BSL software to download the firmware.

It is not clear why this doesn't work directly, but judging from the connector on the PCB, this product was developed long before Windows 10.  It still takes several minutes once started to begin operation.

  • Irving,

I'm glad you solved the problem. This is true, the EVM was developed long before Win10 and currently we cannot guarantee GUI functionality with the OS as we have not fully tested this yet.
