Burning AM3352 CPUs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3352

Dear TI support ,

We have an issue with burning AM3352 devices on SOM boards which we buy on the market.

We thought that there might be an issue with the temprature  grade of the CPU devices that are placed on the SOM since we read in the AM335x Thermal Considerations Wiki that the AM3352 Tj is only 90 Deg C max and we are using some closed box that might have an effect on the CPU temperatrure (the SOM's CPU is commercial temp)..

We have some questions :

1. Is the internal built in bandgap sensor operational and working in the AM3352 device ?

It seems that we read constant value from its related register

2. Is the thermal shutdown feature of the AM3352 operational and working in the AM3352 device ?

3. Did you face any damage to AM335X device (real flames and smoke from the center of the device)  if the device is exposed to a hot environment where the MAX TJ is reached ?

Thanks in advance ,

See this thread (comments made by peaves): http://e2e.ti.com/support/arm/sitara_arm/f/791/t/238819.aspx . I think this will also answer your second question.

No, I don't think such a thing has ever been reported. What is the software environment you are using? Have you contacted the SOM manufacturer?

  • Let me add a 2C.

Once I shorted a GPIO pin to ground. Added a jumper for this.

The intention was to switch the boot mode from UART to NAND.

Before that the board worked many hours.

The board started and worked for ~5 minutes, the processor got hot, and hanged soon.

After that this board still boots up and works for ~2 minutes, then am335x becomes hot and hangs.

Sitara chips do not like if pins are grounded.

SOM  uses SODIMM connector which is sensitive to the PCB geometry and insertion accuracy.
