Linux/PROCESSOR-SDK-AM335X: USB detection fails

Part Number: PROCESSOR-SDK-AM335X

Tool/software: Linux

I've tried to install the SDK per http://www.ti.com/tool/PROCESSOR-SDK-AM335X

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

and I get stuck (even after login/out to ensure 'device' user auth) at :

"No BeagleBone (Black) or StarterKit Detected. Assumign general purpose evm is being used. Is this correct ? "

selecting 'no', shows:

"Please connect the Beaglebone (Black) or StarterKit to the PC..."

...

ad infinitum.

it's connected. dmesg shows the beaglebone is detected. however, I don't see a new /dev/tty* device.

Yet, the beaglebone's WLAN over USB shows up (that is, I get another network adapter on ubuntu host from beaglebone) - but the SDK does not detect the beaglebone.

Any tips on breaking this loop appreciated!

this is a block to then installing the drivers, and testing the wl18x driver...
