Linux/AM3352: MPU hangs with kernel v3.14.43

Guru 10295 points

Part Number: AM3352

Tool/software: Linux

Hi Sitara support team,

I have just started this new thread regarding the below post.

e2e.ti.com/.../2675338

My customer understands that this problem can be avoided by changing the new kernel version

However if the cause is not clarified, their end-user cannot convince in the current status.

Hypothesis just as good, so if there is any cause for CPU hang-up, in accordance with that

they can study the kernels.

And also my customer would like to post all of the contents of this inquiry to the ARM community,

Is it no problem?

Best regards,

Kanae

  • Kanae,

I'm afraid this may be caused by something that has been added to the system. Can you please try your testing with the Base Filesystem that comes with the SDK? This will help eliminate any changes that have been made to user land.

    Thank you.
  • Hi Ron,

    Thank you for your suggestion.
I will recommend to try testing with the Base Filesystem that comes with processor-sdk-linux-01.00.01.

I also need your answer to the following question.

Is it no problem that my customer will post all of the contents of this inquiry to the ARM community?

  • Kanae,

I think Brad's suggestions in the linked post are the right path. I believe you will get similar feedback from the ARM community. However, I don't see any problem with posting the content to the ARM community as this is a publically viewable web site with no proprietary content.

I hope this is helpful to you.
  • Hi Ron,

    Thank you for your reply.

I hope my customer will get some clues to explain the cause to the end user.

    Best regards,
    kanae

  • Hi Ron,

    Thank you for your support.

My customer has tested with the other Filesystems including the SDK.
They have confirmed that the Filesystem does not have effect on this issue.

Could you please check that enabling the HIGHMEM function has effect on to the CPU hang issue?

As I have posted the following related thread about the problem of "AM 3352 CPU hang up",
my customer find from their verification result that CPU hang will occur
when HIGHMEM of Linux kernel option is enabled.

    e2e.ti.com/.../2675338

【HIGHMEM verification result: Linux kernel version: 3.13.4】
    (1) DRAM 1 GB HIGHMEM valid ---> CPU hang occurs
    (2) DRAM 1 GB HIGH MEM invalid ---> No occurrence
    (3) DRAM 512 MB ---> No occurrence

    Best regards,
    Kanae
  • Kanae,

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I'm not sure I understand this statement:

    Kanae said:
My customer has tested with the other Filesystems including the SDK.
They have confirmed that the Filesystem does not have effect on this issue.

Did they replicate the issue using the TI FS?

I also noticed that they seem to be using a pretty old kernel that is no longer supported. Is it possible for them to try their testing on a newer kernel? Ideally, the recently released SDK 5.0 that includes kernel version 4.14.

  • Hi RonB,

    Thank you for your reply.

-Did they replicate the issue using the TI FS?
    > Yes. They have replicated the issue using the TI FS with their kernel.

As my first post in this thread,
my customer understands that this problem can be avoided by changing the new kernel version.
However if the cause is not clarified, their end-user cannot convince in the current status.

Could you please give us any comments that enabling the HIGHMEM function has effect on to the CPU hang issue?

    Best regards,
    Kanae
  • Kanae,

I'm assuming they have some application that they are running on the FS that is causing the problem. We enable HIGHMEM in our default configurations, so all of our testing has it enabled and we haven't seen a problem like this to my knowledge.

I'm sorry we can't help more with debugging their kernel and applications that seem to be interacting to cause this hang.
  • Hi RonB,

    Thank you for your reply.

I had explained that the customer's system should be used the latest kernel in SDK,
or my customer should verified the validity in their countermeasure to the CPU hang by their own.
I was able to have my customer understand it mentioned above.

    I really appreciate your support!

    Best regards,
    Kanae
