PCM2902C: USB to Audio Converter

Part Number: PCM2902C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3137D2

Hi ,

We would like to design the USB to audio speaker out.

Our requirement is speaker output should support from 3W to 5W with support of 2.5meter cable legth to speaker.

I have selected PCM2902C Chipset for to design the usb to audio out.

Can you please suggest the suitable power amplifier to support our requirement up to 5W audio out and cable length 2.5 meter ?

Can TPA3137D2 fulfill my requirement ?

  • Hello,

The PCM2902C provides single-ended analog output signals that have a full-scale value of 3Vpp with a 5V supply (5V*0.6).  The minimum recommended load impedance on these outputs is 10kΩ.

Therefore, any analog input audio amplifier with >10kΩ single-ended inputs that accepts a 3Vpp full-scale input signal on a +5V supply will work.  An attenuator could be added between the PCM2902C and the amplifier if the 3Vpp signal is too large.  Longer distance cabling (>2.5m) should be discussed in more detail with the TPA3137 team.  I recommend a separate thread.

  • Hi Collin,

    Thanks for your input.

Can you please let us know, how much maximum load speaker we can connect to the output of PCM290xCEVM-U) Evalution board ?

Is it support 5W output ?

  • Hi Paresh,

The PCM290x does not support a high-power output directly and you'll need to use an external amplifier to drive loads with impedances <10kΩ.
