PCM2704C: EVM volume/mute buttons not working with Android

Part Number: PCM2704C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2704, TPA3138D2, , PCM2900

Hey all,

A customer is having issues with the PCM2704 EVM:

"We are currently using the PCM2704C EVM with the TPA3138D2 EVM for testing, and the volume control buttons on the EVM are not working.

The DAC is detected by Android and the audio output is switched on the external speaker, but the volume +/- buttons and the mute button are not working. We tried with Android 4, 8 and the result was the same.

We also tried using a Windows 10 computer, and everything works fine.

We tried using a PCM2900 EVM on the same Android devices (Android 4, 8 and 10) and the volume control and mute buttons were working fine. We don’t want to use the PCM2900 in our product because we want to use the tablet internal microphone."

Some follow-up information:

How are you connecting the speaker system to the Android tablet? "The EVM is plugged on the tablet with a USB cable."

Does the PCM2900 work on android 10? "Yes, the audio and the volume control buttons."

Does PCM2704C work with a different android device? "No. The audio is working, but the volume control buttons are not."

  • Hello Cameron,  These devices were designed before Android was even released!  we need to let the customer know that TI does not development hardward drivers, and they will need to find other Android experts to ensure these tools can be used. Sorry but this is the best we can do in this regard.
