Some cc8520 questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC8520, CC2590

Hello all,

I've been looking at using the cc8520 for a pet project of mine, and I've got a couple questions (some of which might be really dumb....I really dont know much about RF/Wireless in general).

1. The data sheet mentions that the cc8520 will be capable of bi-directional transmission in a future firmware release.

a) By bi-directional I'm assuming that means full-duplex, not half-duplex. Is this correct?

b) Will it be bidirectional stereo or just mono?

c) When is the updated firmware expected to be released? And where will it be available? Will it just be as an update to the configurator?

2.Now for the 'I know nothing about wireless' questions......involving antennaes.

a) Can I just take an antennae and slap it on the RF_P and RF_N pins? Because that would make my life a lot easier.

b)The application circuit shows a lot of passive components between the antennae and the chip's two pins, but does not specify any of their values. Is there some resource that exists to obtain these values?

c) What kind of range would I expect to see if i used a CC2590 vs not using one? My board space is kind of at a premium so the fewer chips, the better.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: Forgot one thing!

The datasheet also mentions on page one that there is a "Data Side-Channel" that lets me send (I'm assuming a limited amount) of digital data between the two controllers. This is literally the only reference to this data channel I could find. Does anybody know more about this or know where I can find more information about how to use it, etc?

  • Hi Lewis,

    1.

    a) Full-duplex :)

    b) Currently the plan is stereo in one direction and mono in the other direction. But we do support 4 audio channels in the network, so it's definately possible. It's just a matter of testing time; we have to test it and confirm that it works good enough for release, and maybe do some tweaking on the timing and so on.. So it's a little hard to answer yes or no at the moment.

    c) We are aiming for end of June for the bi-directional firmware. It will come as a new version of the PurePath Wireless Configurator.

    2.

    a) No, you need a balun and matching network in between.

    b) If you download the reference design for the EMs you'll find component information. See the chapter "Reference design" on this page: http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/cc8520.html#technicaldocuments.

    c) See this app note for some range information: http://www.ti.com/litv/pdf/swra320. But I also recommend you try it out yourself to get a feeling. The CC85XXDK countains both EMs (with and without thCC2590).

The data side channel is well described in the CC85xx Family User's Guide: http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/swru250f/swru250f.pdf. The main limitations is 100kbps at best, and you need an external MCU on both devices to use the dataside channel.

  • In regards to 1.a:

Is full-duplex (bidirectional audio) indeed possible with the 8520?

The configurator clearly states that a 8530/31 is needed for bidirectional audio.

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  • Hi Tim,

With the newest Configurator (1.2.2) it's possible to have bi-directional audio even when using a CC8520.

    Just to clairfy:

-CC852X supports 2 audio channels. You can have 2 input channels (for example a stereo headphone), 2 output channels (for example a stereo headphone base station), or bi-directional i.e. 1input and 1 output (mono headset with mic). One input channel and one output channel is a new feature which came in FW1.2.2.

-CC853X supports 4 audio channels. With this you can make a stereo headset (L+R+mono mic). This have been possible since FW1.2.0.
