TPA3140D2:A question about TPA3140D2 Gain Setting.

Part Number: TPA3140D2

Hello.

I have a question about TPA3140D2 Gain Setting. The current SLOU405 TPA3140D2EVM User's Guide 3.1 TPA3140D2 EVM Schematic is referred to to design the same circuit.

A 4ohm, 10W speaker is connected to the OUTPL/OUTPN terminal. While applying a 1KHz 0.775 Vrms signal and adjusting the gain from 20dB to 26dB during Gain Setting, the TPA3140D2 was changed to Shutdown mode.

Please let me know the solution for this.

Thank you.

  • Hi Park

TPA3140 overcurrent threshold is 3.1A typical. I think after gain adjustment, output current increase up to OC threshold, and OC fault happened.

    Please monitor output current.

    Regards,

    Derek

  • Thank you for answer.

Which terminal should I use to monitor the output current?

And I would like to ask you a few questions about the setting parameters.

    1. SSCTRL

In order to turn on SS-1,2 at the same time, should SS-1,2 be turned on while SS-1,2 off?

Also, can SS-1 and 2 be turned on at the same time?

    2.Gain

Can I use 20,26dB with both On at the same time when setting Gain?

    3. LIMRATE

Is it correct to set Plimit On to adjust the LIMTHRES threshold and to set Slow/Medium/Fast to On?

Ex. Plimit On / Slow On

It is above and please reply.

    thank you
  • Hi,

The issue is not related to SSC and Plimit. Plimit only limit output voltage, not power.

Can you monitor output current when issue happened?

  • Hello, thanks for the reply.

I can't monitor the output current because I've disabled that IC right now.

According to the datasheet, the test conditions for OC 3.1A are when RL is 3 ohm, and the RL of the speaker I used is 4 ohm.

Doesn't the OC condition change in this regard?

Also, items 1 to 3 in the above article are separate from the OC phenomenon, and I would like to inform you that I asked questions while setting up.

    thank you
  • Hi

OC threshold is same when 4ohm load.

Did you check Isat of output beads or inductors?

  • hello.

I haven't checked the output stage bead or inductor yet.

If you can tell us about the check points and procedures, we will check it out.

Also, items 1 to 3 in the above article are separate from the OC phenomenon, and I would like to inform you that I asked questions while setting up.

    thank you

  • Hi,

For OC issue, you can check output current and output beads or inductor Isat is enough or not. Because turn up Gain will trigger OC, that means OC is triggered when output current increased.

For question 1 SSCTRL, SS1 and SS2 can not be on at same time. The setting is controlled by SSCTRL voltage.

For question 3 LIMRATE, it is same as SSCTRL. When PLIMIT is on, other Slow/Medium/Fast mode is disable.

    Regards,

    Derek
